Why Summer Heat Is Hard on Commercial Fleets
Extreme heat pushes every system on your vehicle harder. Engines run hotter, tires build up pressure and break down faster, batteries lose life, and fluids thin out and degrade. Add the heavy loads and long idle times common in Central Valley freight and delivery work, and you have a recipe for heat-related failures. The fleets that sail through summer are the ones that prepare for it before the first heat wave hits.
Cooling Systems — Your First Line of Defense
Your cooling system works overtime in the summer, and it’s the number-one thing to check. Make sure to:
- Check coolant level and condition, and flush it on schedule.
- Inspect the radiator, hoses, and clamps for leaks, cracks, or soft spots.
- Test the radiator cap and thermostat.
- Clean debris from the radiator and condenser fins so air flows freely.
An overheating engine on a 105-degree day can turn a minor issue into a major repair fast. Cooling-system checks are the cheapest insurance you can buy.
Tires — Heat’s Favorite Target
Hot pavement plus high ambient temperatures cause tire pressure to rise and heat to build inside the tire, which dramatically increases blowout risk. Before and during summer, check tire pressure regularly (in the morning when tires are cool), inspect tread depth and sidewalls for cracking or bulging, and rotate tires on schedule. Underinflated or worn tires are far more likely to fail in the heat — and a blowout at highway speed is dangerous as well as costly.
Batteries — Summer Kills Them Too
Most people blame winter for dead batteries, but heat is actually harder on them. High temperatures accelerate the chemical wear inside a battery and speed up fluid evaporation. Have your batteries tested, clean any corrosion off the terminals, and make sure connections are tight. Replacing a weak battery during a scheduled service is a lot cheaper than a jump-start call when a truck won’t crank in a hot yard.
Don’t Forget Fluids, Belts, and A/C
Heat also affects your engine oil, transmission fluid, and other lubricants, which can thin out and lose effectiveness — so keep them fresh and at the right levels. Inspect belts and hoses for cracking and glazing, since rubber degrades faster in high heat. And don’t overlook the cab air conditioning: driver comfort isn’t just a nicety in Central Valley summers — an overheated, fatigued driver is a safety risk.

- Coolant flushed and topped off; radiator, hoses, and cap inspected
- Tires checked for pressure, tread, and sidewall condition
- Batteries load-tested; terminals cleaned and tightened
