Cooler weather is easier on your fleet than a Central Valley summer, but winter brings its own set of problems — hard starts, gelled fuel, weak batteries, and moisture in air systems. A little preparation before the temperatures drop keeps your trucks starting reliably and running through the season. Here’s a practical winter readiness guide for fleet operators.
Batteries: The First Thing to Fail in the Cold
Cold weather is brutal on batteries — a battery that’s already weak in mild weather often won’t crank a diesel on a cold morning. Before winter:
- Load-test every battery and replace any that are marginal
- Clean and tighten terminals and check cables for corrosion
- Make sure the charging system and alternator are healthy
- Check that block heaters (where equipped) are working
Fuel: Prevent Diesel Gelling
When temperatures drop, the paraffin in diesel can begin to gel and clog fuel filters and lines — a common cold-weather no-start. To stay ahead of it:
- Use winter-blend diesel or an appropriate anti-gel additive
- Replace fuel filters before the season so they start clean
- Keep tanks fuller to reduce condensation and water in the fuel
- Drain water separators regularly
Cooling System & Antifreeze
Antifreeze does double duty in winter — it prevents the coolant from freezing and protects the engine. Have the coolant tested for the correct freeze protection and condition, and check hoses, the water pump, and the thermostat so the engine warms up and holds temperature properly.
Air Brakes & Moisture
Moisture in air-brake systems can freeze in cold weather and cause brakes to malfunction — a serious safety risk. Drain the air tanks regularly and service the air dryer so water never gets the chance to freeze in the lines.
Tires & Visibility
- Check tread depth and condition — traction matters more in wet, cold conditions
- Adjust for pressure changes, since cold air lowers tire pressure
- Replace worn wiper blades and top off winter washer fluid
- Check that all lights and defrosters work for shorter, darker days

Winter is also a good time to catch up on general preventive maintenance: fluids, belts, hoses, and a thorough inspection. Small issues that are manageable in mild weather become breakdowns when it’s cold and wet, so catching them early pays off.
